Stuart Cumberland

Abbey Fellow 2012

Stuart Cumberland is interested in ornament - a term that is often used in a derogatory way but that he feels is accurate and positive. He will use his time in Rome visiting neo-classical gardens, studying their proportions, repetitions and ornamental qualities in such places as Villa Doria Pamphili and Villa Borghese. He is fascinated by the use of water and is interested in the relationship between ornamental water and liquid paint. He has been using the stencil technique for a decade and will plan to use his time in Rome to re-invigorate his repertoire of 'readymade' simple hand made forms and increase his understanding of how to use them.
