Neil McNally

Abbey Fellow 2016

Neil McNally is fascinated by artists whose biographical histories include travel from Wales to Rome, particularly Richard Wilson and Thomas Jones, whose development as painters was profoundly and specifically influenced by the culture of Italy. He would like to make a whole new series of paintings based upon what he discovers from an extended period in Rome, concentrating on connections between Andrea Mantegna and his studies of ancient Roman architecture, especially what was called the 'culture of marble', as well as the concept of paragone, (comparison of the arts), and Etruscan art, via Georges Braque.
