Vivien Zhang

Abbey Scholar 2016

The idea of authenticity in relationship to authority is very important to Vivien Zhang’s practice. She has been looking at the ideas of 'fakes' and 'hyper-reality' in the works of Italian philosopher Umberto Eco, and will examine illusions created in ancient frescoes throughout Italy. She is interested in Rome as an epicentre of visible collisions in time in terms of cultural and social progressions. During the residency at the BSR, she will explore sites that relate to these ideas and which exemplify the characteristics of the palimpsest. This includes, for instance, San Nicola in Carcere, Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, and Indipendenza gallery.
