The Abbey Scholarship and Fellowships in Painting

Abbey Awards offer all expenses paid residencies at the British School at Rome for artists showing exceptional merit and promise.

The Abbey Scholarship offers one annual nine month residency for an early career artist at The British School at Rome, with a monthly stipend of £800.

Abbey Fellowships offer three annual three month residencies for mid-career artists at The British School at Rome, each with monthly stipends of £1,200.

Am I eligible?

Abbey Awards are open to UK and US citizens and artists of other nationalities who have been resident in the UK or US for at least five of the last ten years.

The Abbey Scholarship offers one early-career artist a full academic year (October to June) at the British School at Rome.

The Abbey Fellowships offer three mid-career artists three months at the School during the same period.

There is no age limit and the definition of painting is understood to include all artists working in the ‘expanded field’.

How do I Apply and When?

We will be accepting applications online and by post from 17th September 2018. The deadline will be 31st January 2019. Application Fee: £25.00 (or equivalent in $US).

Shortlisting will take place in London during early February 2019 and candidates will be notified whether or not they have been shortlisted for an interview at the latest by the end of February.

Interviews will be held in London in the first half of March 2019.

To apply online via We Transfer or Dropbox (from 17/09/18):

  1. Download and complete the application form.
  2. Pay the application fee of £25 (or $US equivalent) via the PayPal button below.
  3. Send the completed application form with 8 Jpeg images via WeTransfer or Dropbox addressed to contact@abbey.org.uk

(Please don’t send large images or file attachments via email).

To apply by post:

  1. Download and complete the application form.
  2. Return the completed application form and a CD/DVD containing your 8 Jpeg images to The Administrator.
  3. The application fee of £25 (or $US equivalent) is payable via the PayPal button below OR enclose a cheque payable to INCORPORATED EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

File Specifications:

Files should be sent in JPG format at minimum 72 dpi, maximum 300 dpi. Make sure your file size does not exceed 3MB. Avoid further compressing individual JPG files; they're already compressed. Name and number your images to correspond with your slide list, i.e artist's first initial + artist's last name + number from 01 to 08 (For example, if submitting three images as JPGs for the artist William Blake: wblake01.jpg, wblake02.jpg, and wblake03.jpg.)
