During the residency at the British School in Rome, I was inspired by the ancient archaeological finds in the many museums, in which artifacts of unidentifiable origin or function were assembled together as a pastiche to make them easier for visitors to understand. I found the human desire to make sense of history in relation to the present, by creating something that is fictional, fascinating. Much of what we see as historical artifact we in fact know very little about, so believable arrangements and histories are invented that we think make sense, and allow these artifacts to be presented as a theatre of truth.
