I was interested in studying the natural forms that were sculpted as supports to hold up Roman statues. My first week lecture expanded on the the symbolism of the word ‘support’ in reference to the conflicts around war and the environment that we are experiencing at the moment. I looked back at the different ways that supports have influenced my work, visiting the Sistine ceiling restoration scaffolding during the 1980’s for example, and how the structures I make for my sculptures and objects have become as important to me as the work they carry.
