I’ve long been interested in the found object and I traversed the city far and wide in search of leftover or discarded wood, armed with a compact Japanese razor saw in my backpack. I would take away driftwood washed up on the river bank, pieces from deserted pallets, and bits of disused furniture. I had in mind the composite use of multi-coloured marbles sourced from different corners of the globe and encountered in so many Roman churches and palaces. Similarly I glued together the various woods in a very simple rectangular block which I then inked up and printed by hand in the traditional manner of woodblock printing.
