My referent-plundering process took from Pozzo’s ceiling at the Chiesa di Sant’ Ignazio di Loyola with its marked foreshortening and schematic strategies that organise space and play to a perceived viewer. What I hadn’t grasped before my stay in Rome was the richness of examples to be found – from the Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Borghese’s panelled detailing to the relief work at the Basilica Parracchiale di Santa Maria del Popolo –and the profound effect this prolonged scrutiny would have on my art practice.
