“Walking out into Rome, from the BSR every day, encountering both the familiar and unfamiliar, returning to the studio and making was a rich and rewarding experience. I processed what I had seen through working with material and thinking about this connection between flatness and three dimensionality, the image of a ‘thing’ and the physical experience of it. I also worked on the colour that I used with the sculptures, deliberately not specifically referencing anything but allowing colour to come in through the experience of walking in the city. This might be the colour of the seats in the tram, or the colour of the river. I tried above all to notice things.”
