As I began to make paintings in the studio, I found that I was gravitating towards the numerous frescoes I had seen in places such as The Archeological Museum in Naples, Ostia Antica, Pompeii, Herculaneum and particularly the reinstallations of frescoes on the top floor of the Pallazo Massimo. The Garden Room fresco of the Villa of Livia became particularly important for me and luckily I visited it on the third day of the residency because I was then able to return to it on multiple occasions over the three month period. Without any conscious effort, the paintings definitely took on qualities of the frescoes I saw and I can certainly see evidence of the influence in the colour palette I used. By the end of the three month period, I had completed roughly fifty paintings which I am still in the process of looking through and ruminating on.
